Bomba Estéreo is one Colombian group that has already made its mark on the international music scene! Drawing on a blend of cumbia and psychedelic electro, and projecting an image influenced by the pop culture of the Caribbean coast, the ensemble has successfully established itself as a vibrant sound phenomenon.
The project was the brainchild of Simón Mejía, working with DJ Fresh to explore a mix of folk and electronic music. This was the early sound system. Then followed the encounter and instant chemistry with Liliana Saumet, destined to become the group’s iconic singer.
From the outset, they took a forward-looking approach to promoting their material, offering their first tracks free of charge to DJs around the world and making their work available at no cost via digital media. It took a while, but it paid off: people were taking notice of their sound. This provided a springboard to help the group make a name for themselves more easily in the United States and Europe, bringing their beats to lovers of tropical music everywhere.
Bomba Estéreo is undoubtedly one of the groups at the forefront of the burgeoning Colombian scene. Their live shows are completely unfettered and loud, with plenty of base. Liliana cheerfully sways to the booming electro beat against a backdrop of colourful visuals straight out of Colombian kitsch.
